Deep Space Nine’s pilot episode EMISSARY is, in my humble opinion, the best of the Star Trek pilots.  The exploration of Benjamin Sisko’s past and present is powerful and poignant.  The moment when Sisko finally understands and admits, “I exist here,” is some of the purest Trek I have ever seen.  So let’s dive in and see what more the novels can offer to expand our understanding of the episode.

The Saratoga Crew

During the first scene of the DS9 pilot we join Commander Sisko and the crew of the Saratoga in the midst of the battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg.  Unfortunately the Saratoga did not survive the battle but it looks like many of the crew was able to get away in the escape pods.  So who are these people with whom Sisko served?  There are a few books that give us a glimpse of who they are.

The old ore processing station orbiting Bajor has a history all it’s own. It is a wonderful part of the series and we do get glimpses of it’s past.  There are several books that visit Terok Nor during the Bajoran occupation.  Most notably among them is the Terok Nor trilogy which is part of the Lost Era series.  Not only are the books wonderful but the covers are is incredible.

Benjamin Sisko

And there is Benjamin Sisko.  More than any of our other Star Trek Captains this is a man with a past.  His wife, his son, his time at the Utopia Planitia shipyards.  We start with a lot of information about his past and a lot of questions.  The show does a good job of filling in a lot of information about his past but we never go on an adventure with young Sisko.

And what about this?  When Sisko arrives on the Promenade for the first time he sees Odo “doing his thing”.  Sisko pulls out his phaser and fires a shot right next to Odo and the thief.    It is a pretty impressive display of marksmanship but no one ever mentions it.  Where did Sisko learn to shoot like that?  Thanks to the books we know the answer.  Check out THE SEIGE to find out.
