“CHECK THE CIRCUIT!”

I love THE CAGE.  What a great vision of the future as seen through this adventure with Captain Christopher Pike.  We will never know what Star Trek would have looked like with this very interesting crew…or will we?  There are several Star Trek novels and comics that expand on the story of Captain Pike, Number One, Doctor Boyce and crew.  Let’s take a look at where we can learn more.

The Early Voyages Comics

I don’t usually talk about the Star Trek comics.  They are not really in my wheel house.  But in this case I have read some of the Early Voyages comics and they are definitely worth reading.  We don’t get a lot of time with Pike and crew in the Star Trek novels and it is nice that the comics took some time to explore with them.  The stories are quality and the art work is amazing.  Check it out!

Captain Christopher Pike

There are actually a handful of books that feature Captain Pike as the main character.  Some of them like BURNING DREAMS pictured above delve into his past and help up understand the Captain Pike that we meet in THE CAGE.  There are also several books that feature Captain Pike in more of a guest star type roll.  Here is a list:

Pike as a main character:
Child of Two Worlds (Star Trek: The Original Series) – Not long after the events of THE CAGE there is an outbreak of Rigelian fever on the ship.  Doctor Boyce may have a cure but Pike will have to avoid war with the Klingons to get it.

Star Trek: The Original Series: Burning Dreams (Star Trek (Unnumbered Paperback)) – Dive into Pike’s past. Find out what drives him and what haunts him.

Where Sea Meets Sky (Star Trek: The Captain’s Table, Book 6) – An exciting adventure told from Pike’s point of view.

Star Trek: The Original Series: Vulcan’s Glory – Told from Spock’s point of view.  This is the story of his first mission on the Enterprise with Pike.

Star Trek: The Original Series: The Children of Kings – Pike and crew tangle with the Orions three years before THE CAGE.

Star Trek: Myriad Universes: Infinity’s Prism (Bk. 1) – In an alternate future where the Federation was never formed Pike is Captain of the Enterprise and Kirk is his first officer.

Enterprise Logs: Star Trek – In the short story, “Conflicting Natures” Pike and crew assist in a mining rights negotiation with a strange alien race.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds I – In the short story, “A Private Anecdote” a crippled Pike reflects on the past.

Captain Pike as a “Guest Star”:
Star Trek Enterprise: The First Adventure – Kirk’s first adventure as Captain of the Enterprise.  He has to get the “keys” to the ship from Commodore Pike.

The Rift (Star Trek: The Original Series Book 57) – While visiting a strange alien race, with Kirk and crew, Spock remembers the first time he encountered the race with Captain Pike.

Legacy (Star Trek, Book 56) – Kirk and Spock face off against one of Captain Pike’s old enemies.

The Lives of Dax (Star Trek Deep Space Nine) – In the short story, “Sins of the Mother” Captian Pike has a close call with a deadly parasite.

Star Trek: Mirror Universe: Shards and Shadows – In the Mirror Universe Kirk plots to kill Pike.  See the short story, “Greater Good”.

Number One

The books above featuring Captain Pike also feature Number One and the rest of the crew from THE CAGE. There are also some interesting revelations made about Number One in Peter David’s New Frontier series.  Below is one of the novels that hints at her past but I highly recommend the entire New Frontier series.  It is amazing!

Renaissance (Star Trek New Frontier: Excalibur, Book 10)

Talos IV

Talos IV gets a passing mention in a few of the Star Trek novels.  In fact in the novel BURNING DREAMS listed above it seems that the Talosian culture is thriving once again thanks to the efforts of Christopher Pike.

Mission Gamma Book Three: Cathedral (Star Trek Deep Space Nine) (Bk.3) – Nog remembers a mission as a cadet to Talos IV.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Q&A – Starfleet now has a scanner that can detect the Talosian illusions.

  1. Because you say you’re not too familiar with the comics: Nog’s comment in Cathedral is actually a reference to the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy comic series in which Nog was a member of Omega Squad. The specific mission he’s referencing was repelling an attacking force of Jem’Hadar from Talos IV (part of a plan on the Dominion’s part to wipe out telepaths during the War).
